On my first evening at Suryagarh, Jaisalmer, Karan Singh, president of MRS Hospitality Group, quoted W B Yeats’ Cloths of Heaven. He recited,

‘Had I the heaven’s embroidered cloths,
Enwrought with golden and silver light,
The blue and the dim and the dark cloths
Of night and light and the half-light;
I would spread the cloths under your feet:
But I, being poor, have only my dreams;
I have spread my dreams under your feet;
Tread softly because you tread on my dreams.’

As we raised a toast to Suryagarh, I saw the golden shimmer sparkle through my glass of Champagne. That was only the beginning of this enticement.

The following days I walked around Suryagarh, in an attempt to explore its beauty. I learnt two things. First, it was an insurmountable task to capture its persona and spaces. And second, it shone like the golden sun all through the day –  reminding me of Satyajit Ray’s Sonar Kella.

This is just a glimpse of the palatial hotel. To experience it, you have to live it.
